Shichons are much bigger than most people expect, They can be hyper and needy and
are known for YAPPING! As cute as Teddy Bear Puppies and Shichons are, They are
not a good BREED for every family. As cute and as cuddly as the appear it is so
important you know everything about this mix breed of Shih Tzu Bichon mix before
you get one. So we wanted to share Everything we found out about this breed .
If you travel alot by plane the Shichon may be to large for you to be able
to take on the plane and may have to travel by cargo.
If you do have a Shichon or are considering a Shichon after taking into account
the information you now have kon the breed. We want you to know how to prepare
for your puppy once it comes home.
The amount of affection you show your puppy also establishes you as alpha. By
all means, of course, show affection to your Shichon puppy, but don’t go
overboard with too much lovey-dovey stuff. There will be plenty of time for
cuddles and kisses, just don’t overdo it, especially at the beginning when you
are setting the alpha tone. You want to first establish the rules and pecking
order.
Rules have need I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!!! to be implemented when owning
Shichon puppies.
They are a dog that need a firm owner so you do not run the risk of the nasty
temperament that some Shichons display as they mature. Being very firm
especially during the first two weeks your puppy is home sets you up for
success. Running, chewing, playing and nipping are all common puppy behaviors.
Let your Shichon puppy know what the boundaries are and when he’s overstepped
them. Yes, a puppy learns about his surrounding by chewing, but step in as the
pack leader, set the rules and let him know what is his to chew and what is not.
Yes, puppies love to nip and chew on fingers like they do with their toys and
their mates, but they need to know there’s a difference and that it’s
unacceptable to chew on you or your kids. It’s your responsibility to teach him
what is acceptable and what is not. If you have kids, it is important to teach
them how to interact with the puppy as well. If you have a free-for-all in your
home and have kids running wild and bouncing off the furniture, you can expect
to have a puppy running wild and doing the same. Shichons try and rule the roost
. It is your job to let them know they are a PUPPY and at the END of the pecking
order. Shichon puppies can be difficult to train because they alpha spirited. So
please make sure you are the leader of the pack and ready for the challenge a
Shichon can bring.
Consistency and limitations are important and will make all the difference in
the world. If you are not seen as the alpha by your Shichon puppies in all
circumstances, you can expect to be taken for granted and not obeyed. He will
not listen to you and instead, he will manipulate you with his tender, doleful
looks. And believe me, the cute expressions these guys come up with can melt an
iceberg. Don’t fall prey to your Shichons adorable puppy eyes! Show him
what’s right and wrong and be consistent in your behavior to him from the
beginning. You will be glad you did. And don’t forget to consider getting into a
puppy training class to help you in your new role. There are also trainers who
will provide in-home service calls. A professional will not only help you train
your Shichon, but he can help move you light years ahead in learning to
communicate in a way that makes your Shichon understand that you’re the leader.
All puppies are cute and making one a part of your family can be an incredibly
enriching experience. At the same time, they require work, dedication and
patience. The Shichon breed is NOT FOR EVERY family and many Shichon breeders
rely on you rto buy a dog based on the level of CUTENESS! and impulse purchase
if you will. Do not fall in to that trap.
Make sure the Shichon breeders you consider are interested in making a perfect
match for you and the Shichon puppy you are considering,
As with any breed there is the PRO's and the CON's.
Do your research on any breed you are considering before you adopt a puppy. You
have the right to get the full scope of the breed. NOT JUST THE BREEDERS point
of view. Shichin breeders should be willing to tell you about the SHICONS entire
package. Health issues.. Temperament issues.. and size issues that have come up.
Any Shichon breeder not willing to talk about the good and bad of the breed is a
huge red flag.
Please do not adopt any puppy unless you are sure this is something you can
commit to and deal with responsibly.
